Thoughts and Ramblings about Kids and Family and Real Housewives

I sent my oldest son back to college yesterday and just in time too. He loves to do things that irritate me like not putting the beverage he just poured a glass of back into the fridge. Now, everyone knows that there is nothing worse than having a warm beverage when you are expecting the milk or lemonade to be cold. Then he leaves 'stuff' on his bed, floor, and everywhere he wandered the entire visit home. When asked to pick up after himself, he looks at me as if I was crazy. Yep, I love that boy of mine and miss him when he is gone, but man-o-man, I am so glad he goes back home.

Nonetheless, we are blessed with a great family. Mike and Tony suffered through my Real Housewives of New Jersey phase. Now between you and me, I am hoping that Teresa does not return next year because she is nothing but a narcissistic trouble maker. She has to have all the attention on her and if it does not come naturally she causes issues to develop to bring the attention back to her. She is raising four young daughters that have no idea how to behave due to the ineffective parenting and the example she and her husband are giving them. I look at my family and compare the family to the families on the Real Housewives and I realize that the problems with the families on the shows comes from the desire to have all the attention. I have to say, the only family that does not have real serious problems aired on the television is Carolyn's family. Her son Christopher has really changed as the camera has been focused more on him this season and is rather obnoxious but overall, their family appears normal. Joe from Joe and Melissa really needs to come down a few notches in his narcissism, he is well on his way to being very much like his sister Teresa, which is annoying. I wonder if they will change the title of the program to the Real Families of New Jersey since several husbands seem to need to have a ton of attention on them as well as their wives. Then Ashley or Ashlee, Jacqueline's daughter really should be kicked out of the house and fend for herself. Chris is not doing her any favors by allowing her to stay and bring drama on the house. She loves the attention and I swear if she was my daughter, the first time she called me a _ _ _ _ _ she would be out of the house and feeling the effects of calling me that.

On Monday nights, I have been watching Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I feel bad for Taylor, do not have a great impression of Dana (I have to announce how much everything costs so everyone knows I am playing rich), feel sorry for Brandi trying to impress others and being treated like a disease, Lisa needs to stop making out with her dog as it is too gross for words, Camille thinks too much of her body and should seriously reign it in if she is looking for another man. I mean leave a little to the imagination, the hot tub scene last season where she showed most of her body to a friend of Kelsey's and the cameras. Kyle is very much in denial about whatever it is going on with her sister. The number of phone calls that she sounded completely wasted, her odd behavior, and her avoidance of social situations. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, it could be drugs, alcohol, or it could be prescription medications causing the problems but shouldn't someone related to that show address the issue with Kim. Her quality of life is at stake as well as her reputation.

So, what does this have to do with my family. I watch these shows and I think how normal my family is. My youngest son loves his brother and they fight when they are together in a playing manner. Both my boys are slobs in their rooms, but they do not do drugs, drink, or smoke. They are doing well in school, heck, Andy was listed at the beginning of the year at 12th in his class. Both are civic minded, help others, involved in sports and other school activities. Their biggest act of rebellion to date is not putting their dishes in the dishwasher and having a messy room. I am blessed as a parent.

My Baby is Home from College

Yesterday I was so excited that my first born baby was coming home from college for the first time since school started back up. I love having my boys around and I hadn't seen Tony in a while. It was a fall break and as he is sleeping on the sofa in between watching Top Gear on BBCA, I believe he needs to have a break from school.

He is doing good at school, but having some bad luck. See on Thursday night he lost his keys. He has not found them and sadly, his spare car keys were on the missing key chain which poses a great and expensive problem. See, $183 and four hours later, he had a new key for his 1974 bug. He also has to pay nearly $100 to replace the keys and/or locks in his apartment.

I have yet to remind him that I told him not to put his spare car key on the same key chain, but he knew what he was doing. A part of me is happy that he learned a pricey lesson to listen to mom and a part of me wishes he did not have to learn that lesson.

This kid is very loved by his father and me and his younger brother. Andrew loves it when his brother comes home. There is a definite change in his personality when Tony enters the door. We could tell just how much they missed each other by the amount of hitting and slapping they were doing on our way to eat and back home again. I guess that is a brother thing. I never really enjoyed it when my older brother hit me growing up. So it must be a boy thing.

What's Cooking Now?

Bountiful Beer Bread MixGarlic GarlicI am making some Bountiful Beer Bread croutons seasoned
with olive oil and Garlic Garlic. The pan is in the oven right now and the fragrance is incredible. I am going to use them for the soup that I am making tonight. Then I will use those croutons as bread crumbs for my chicken breasts I am going to make tomorrow.

Nana's Apple Cake MixI am also making a Nana's Apple Cake mix for Pumpkin bread made with real pumpkin. Instead of an 8X8 pan, I used a bread pan, added a cup of fresh pumpkin, two eggs, and a handful or two of pecan pieces. I am really looking forward to the bread. I love pumpkin stuff. This will be wonderful.

As to the soup I am going to be making tonight, I am trying to decide between the Perfectly Potato Cheddar Soup mixPerfectly Potato Cheddar Soup Mixand the Bountiful Beer Cheese Soup Bold Buffalo Blue Cheese Dip Mix. I am going to serve up some stadium brats with the soup. I think the Beer Cheese soup will go well with the brats. I will probably simmer the brats in the left over beer from making the soup. The Bountiful Beer Bread croutons will only add to the flavor. Add a bit more cheese and it is perfect for someone who grew up in Wisconsin.

Tastefully Simple Last Night

Oh My! Chai Drink Mix
I went to my first Tastefully Simple team meeting since joining back up nearly two weeks ago. I really enjoyed the meeting, relearning the tips and tricks of taste-testing parties, host coaching, and recruiting consultants. However, I think the best part of the night besides being able to sample products that may be in future catalogs was getting to know the other women. Of the nine of us there last night, three of us were brand new. Of the three, I was the oldest of the three new consultants by barely a week.

Meeting new people is one of the great benefits from being a Tastefully Simple consultant. I love being able to meet new consultants and make new friends with others who are just as excited as I am about Tastefully Simple. Now, I love the products a great deal and there are so many applications for the products besides the most obvious. For me, that is a blast to think about and try new variations on the products. Some of the consultants last night have this same great talent and I loved being able to share and hear the great ideas they had.

Have you ever wanted to have access to some of the best food products around, receive a discount on your own product purchases, earn money when sharing with others the great food, meet new people, encourage others to join the fun of Tastefully Simple?

I joined Tastefully Simple in 2003 the first time because I loved the Oh My Chai! I had moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Hendersonville, NC the same month I joined. I wanted to be able to get out and explore the area, make new friends and have discounted access to my favorite product, the Chai. I was a consultant for four years before I stopped selling Tastefully Simple. Just two weeks ago, I decided that I was tired of paying full price for my favorite products and signed up again with Tastefully Simple. I needed to have these products again and I am so excited.

Yes, I could have ordered the products through another consultant and I did. However, I wanted too many products to pay full price for them. So, I had to be a consultant again.

I love Tastefully Simple and I know if you tried the products, you too will love Tastefully Simple so much that you would be hooked just as I am.

What is it with today's baby toys?

I have seen a few commercials lately that makes me wonder just what is going on with baby toys these days. I understand parents are busy, but are we as parents to busy to play with our children showing them how to use their imaginations? Every toy that was shown today was a remake of a toy my boys had 17 to 20 years ago. The toy companies remade these toys with lights, sounds, and actions that take the place of moms and dads and kiddos playing with them making their own noises, actions, and all that good imagination stuff.

I looked at some of these toys and think that the children today are worse off than my boys were without all the buzzes and whistles and lights on the toys. They laughed as they played with the toys in ways the toy makers never imagined. They had a blast when they had the freedom to make the toys do what ever they wanted and we did not have to look for batteries, listen to blaring sirens, buzzing, and other obnoxious noises.

I understand that the times are a changing and hey it was almost 17 to 20 years ago when these babies of mine were playing with them, but.....ok, hold a second, I understand how old my kids are, but gosh, when you write they were babies 17 to 20 years ago, I don't know if I can handle that.

I guess when I get to be a grandma, I can influence what toys they get to play with, at least at my own house when they visit OFTEN. And you know what, I am going to make sure they have old fashion toys that we can play with together and make our own noises and decide what they are going to be that particular day.

Scents Filling the House

Garlic GarlicYesterday I began browning and simmering some roast letting the bits and pieces of the meat brown on the bottom of the pan make some great flavor. I deglazed the pan with some beef broth and then added a good helping of Garlic Garlic. I let the meat simmer in the broth and spices for a good five hours then added some rustic noodles and made some mashed potatoes, buttered carrots, warmed applesauce with cinnamon to serve with the Bountiful Beer Bread. It was a wonderful meal that left the house smelling delicious the entire day and night. Unfortunately, I couldn't smell the spices coming for the Nana's Apple Cake I made because of the delicious garlic aroma circling throughout the house.

When I went outside to head to the mailbox and wandered back into the house I was thrilled to remember many other times I used Garlic Garlic and the house felt welcoming. Yesterday I said that many memories many of us have are made around food. Sometimes the memories are simply smells that brings you to another time and place, but not a specific event. Garlic is one of those scents I love because it means a meal of substance is being made. A meal that will require time to sit down and enjoy. That means there is time for conversation and laughter. Whether it is a dinner of Italian favorites, Mexican, or simple comfort food like we had last night, it is a meal to be savored with family.

What is your favorite food scent that brings all kinds of memories to mind?

Lois Decky, Survival Mode101, Living the Life You Are Blessed With

I met Lois and her husband when they began volunteering at a local food bank. This lady is a powerhouse in a great way. She is a prayer warrior, frugal and willing to be open to all who she comes in contact with on a daily basis. I am not surprised she wrote the book she did. A book about how to survive life, not the life full of drama you see on the television reality shows, but the real life you and I live in. Survival Mode 101.

I looked over her website Survival Mode with Gramma Lois and am rather impressed with the message she is sharing with all those who are looking to save money.  Here is her words "I have a burning desire to share what I've learned through many years of cutting corners, "making do", repairing home and car problems on our own, learning to shop wisely by use of ads and coupons, stretching food as far as is humanly possible as well as numerous other ways of saving by spending less, budgeting and stockpiling. I firmly believe we must all help each other by sharing whatever information each of us has so we can make it through these extremely difficult times".

Now, I do my share of clipping coupons and saving a ton of money at the grocery stores. I am constantly going to my mail box and opening the great full size and samples and coupons for free things. I believe I know quite a bit about these things and keep all of it in moderation compared to the "Extreme Couponers" seen on television. I am excited to see someone with knowledge, experience, and willingness to share her wisdom do so for the average person who is not seeking to become a hoarder but simply surviving in this economic situation we have been in for the past several years.

I hope you will check out her site and buy her book. She is an incredible lady with an incredible story to tell us all on how to survive when we feel we are at the very end of our financial and emotional rope.

Cold Weather, Lacrosse, Teenagers and Malted Cocoa from Tastefully Simple

Malted Cocoa Mix MiniIt was cold yesterday. I mean cold for October 2 in North Carolina. It was in the upper 50's when my youngest son decided to head off to the Lacrosse field and practice with some friends. By the time he got home it was 50 degrees outside and he had red cheeks from the cold and practice. He asked if I had any Oh My Chai! but I didn't. Have to get some real soon, it is time for Chai. But I did have some Malted Cocoa mix that I whipped up for him. It tastes like a Malted milkshake warmed up.

These are the things that memories are made from, moments of mom's making cocoa for a son coming in from playing outside. I know the times available for these such moments are limited. You see, he is in his junior year of high school and then he too will be off to college. I would love for him to remember the times I did special things for him when he was young and while he was in high school. I would love to have him remember fondly these special things when he begins to have his own family. Much like I have of my family.

Isn't it funny how much we remember and do in our own lives what we experienced when we were growing up. I loved hot cocoa and fall days as much as hot cocoa and winter days. When I handed the mug of steaming hot cocoa last night to Andrew, he took a huge whiff of the cocoa and smiled. He said thank you three times for that cocoa smiling at me. That is a memory that I will always cherish.

You know I am a Tastefully Simple consultant, so I write about some of the products I love and would love to introduce you to and have you try. But there is more than just that. I want you to experience the memories these products can stimulate in your home. It is well known that many memories we have are surrounded by food. It is no surprise that Tastefully Simple can and does bring special memories to your family meals, snacks, and cold weather related activities.
